A SCANDINAVIAN MYTH ABOUT BEER
Once upon a time the gods captured some game and prepared themselves to eat, but before they were full they developed a great thirst. So they questioned destiny and came to know that the sea giant Ægir had an abundance of all goods. Thor, the god of thunder, went to Ægir and ordered him aggressively to prepare beer for the gods banquet. Ægir was annoyed with that arrogant accent so asked Thor to bring him a beer cauldron right for the job.
The gods didn’t have cauldrons big enough so Thor left and being sly took one from the giant Hymir. This way every winter Ægir could prepare beer for them.
In the North beer represented a sacred element especially for warriors, who through beer could assume great power and beneficial vital energies. The magical power of this drink came from the fermentation process, from which the purifying and life-giving force of nature were manifested.
The pendant depicts a drinking horn: container used to consume drinks considered sacred by the Scandinavian population as in fact is the beer.
